There were already two of them outside the house, probably freelance second-stringers called in just in case I showed up. A picture of me leaving the house would make their month.

“We’ll take my car,” Sophie said. She had changed into a soft, flowing knee-length skirt and a jean jacket, her dark hair down and brushing her shoulders, her purse tucked under her arm.

“I don’t like this,” I said, looking at her. The thought of one of those creeps near her was making me crazy again.

“How are you going to get to the airport?” she said practically. “Drive yourself? Call a cab? They’ll see. Besides, I’m not news.” She shrugged. “I’m your boring stepsister. I never do anything interesting. Why would they care about me?”

“You did some very interesting things earlier,” I pointed out.

She blushed, the sight of it so pretty I couldn’t speak for a second. “Well, obviously. That was pretty interesting.”

Fuck it. I dropped my bag, stepped forward, and kissed her, taking her face in my hands. She tasted so good. It started out quick, but we changed our minds and made it long and slow, as her lips parted and I tasted her. In an alternate universe, where Jesetta hadn’t talked to that stupid tabloid, we would still be on the sofa, and by now we’d be fooling around. I’d have my t-shirt off of her, and maybe, if I was lucky, I’d be trying to convince her to go down on her knees for me. Just the mental image of Sophie giving me head was enough to blast everything else from my brain, including my name, the last woman I’d slept with, and every rule of soccer I’d ever known. We would do that, I vowed silently, before my fucking funeral. We would do it, and she would like it. I would make sure of it.

I just didn’t know when.

She broke the kiss reluctantly and looked at me. Her lips were red. “Dex, we don’t have time.”

“I know,” I said.

Her car was in the garage. She got in the driver’s seat while I lay down in the back seat, out of sight. She pressed the button to open the garage door and started off down the driveway.

“Where are they?” I asked her. It was nine o’clock at night, the sky dark through the windows as I lay flat on the seat.

“Um, off to the side of the lawn, near the property line,” Sophie said, glancing around. “I surprised them. One of them is trying to get his camera out of its bag.”

Like I thought, second-stringers. “Just ignore them,” I said.

“I know how to handle them, Dex,” she replied. “I’ve dealt with the press from time to time.”

I watched her as she drove, her slim, capable hands on the wheel, the line of her neck beneath her dark hair. “You’ve dealt with the press?” If she had, I hadn’t been here.

“Well, there was the exhibition game,” she said. “You came home for that. They tried bugging me on campus, but campus security took care of it.
